Milly pulled up in front of the shop. She tried peering into the shop window. Diego dashed out, and piled into the front seat, leaning down so that he couldn’t be seen from the street.

“Take me to your place.”

Milly was frightened. She had just had to take a detour, as the street in front of Diego’s apartment was closed off by the police, with a half dozen police cruisers blocking the way, and two fire trucks dousing a vehicle fire.

Milly drove off, taking back streets to get to her house. She knew better than to ask Diego what was going on just yet. She felt she must wait until they were home, safe, and alone. She frequently checked her rear view mirror to see if they were being followed. Diego lay on the seat and placed his head in Milly’s lap. She stroked his head. “It’s gonna be okay, baby.”
